Bununla bazı modern yorum anlayışları arasında paralellikler olduğunu, özellikle yapıbozumun metni açık uçlu bir evren gibi görerek, yorumcunun onda sonsuz iç bağlantılar keşfedebileceğini öne sürdüğünü belirtmek gerekir. Yorumun mutlaka bir sınırı, bir ölçüsü olması gerektiğini düşünen Eco, üçlü bir kavram zemini üzerinden konuya yaklaşır: Yazarın niyeti (intentio auctoris), okurun niyeti (intentio lectoris) ve metnin niyeti (intentio operis).
