If you're looking for a budget-friendly JTAG programmer for Atmel, USBtinyISP is amongst the best options. This device is a fully-compatible version of the ATMEL JTAGICE mkII, which works exactly the way it's supposed to. Atmel Studio recognizes it effortlessly. The device has been tested with JTAG mode avarice + gdb, and it works great with externally powered microcontrollers. Additionally, the Debugger provides DebugWire support, making it the ideal debugging tool. One thing that should be noted is that Atmel Studio won't work appropriately unless it is connected to an externally powered microcontroller. It can't supply power through the six-pin programming header, which is a letdown, but it provides DebugWire support, making it an excellent addition to any developer's toolkit. This device can be tricky to set up, particularly for first-time users. While it doesn't come with real drivers, it uses a WinUSB/libusb clone that exports the USB stack to userland. Installing a compatible driver can be a bit challenging, but it's worth it. The Zadig software package can be used to apply new drivers if needed, but overall it's straightforward to use for power users. Overall, this product seems like a pretty good way to get out-the-box assistance for most of Atmel's MCU and MPUs product line. It's more compatible with the official Atmel software and provides all of the essential functions for effective programming and debugging with the Atmel Studio.
