What are Seven Top Turnip Greens?

Seven Top Turnip Greens are a variety of turnip plant known primarily for their flavorful greens rather than the root. These greens are highly nutritious, packed with vitamins A, C, and K, making them an excellent addition to salads, stir-fries, or cooked dishes. Unlike traditional turnips, the Seven Top variety produces minimal bulb development, focusing instead on producing lush, edible leaves. As a versatile leafy green, these can be harvested at various stages, allowing you to tailor your harvest to your cooking needs.

How do I grow Seven Top Turnip Greens from seeds?

Growing Seven Top Turnip Greens from seeds is straightforward. Start by selecting well-drained soil, ideally with a pH of 6.0 to 7.5. Sow seeds about a quarter-inch deep, spacing them approximately 12 inches apart. Ensure consistent moisture, but avoid waterlogging. Germination usually occurs within 7 to 14 days. These greens thrive in cooler weather, so planting in early spring or fall is ideal. Consider inter-planting with other crops for efficient use of garden space and to create a diverse harvest.

What is the best time to plant these seeds?

The best time to plant Seven Top Turnip Greens seeds is during the cooler months of early spring or late summer into early fall. This timing allows the plants to thrive without the stress of extreme heat. They prefer temperatures between 50°F and 75°F for optimal growth. Planting in these periods ensures that you can enjoy fresh, tender greens, which are most flavorful when harvested before the heat of summer or the frost of winter. Consider staggered planting for a continuous supply of greens!

Are Seven Top Turnip Greens good for health?

Yes, Seven Top Turnip Greens are incredibly beneficial for health. They are rich in essential nutrients, including fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Regular consumption of these greens can support digestion, boost immunity, and promote healthy skin. Their high antioxidant content helps combat oxidative stress and inflammation in the body. Incorporating these greens into your meals, such as in smoothies, salads, or cooked dishes, not only enhances flavor but also significantly contributes to a balanced diet.

What can I make with Seven Top Turnip Greens?

Seven Top Turnip Greens are versatile and can be used in various dishes. Common preparations include sautéing them with garlic and olive oil, adding them to soups for extra nutrition, or incorporating them into salads for a peppery flavor. You can also blend them into smoothies, offering a nutritious kick without overwhelming sweetness. They pair beautifully with beans, grains, and proteins, making them a great asset in both vegetarian and non-vegetarian diets.

Are there any pests or diseases I should be aware of?

Like many leafy greens, Seven Top Turnip Greens can be susceptible to pests like aphids and caterpillars, as well as diseases such as downy mildew. Regular monitoring and good garden hygiene can prevent infestations. Using row covers can protect young plants from pests while allowing sunlight and rain to nourish them. If you spot any pests, consider using organic insecticidal soap or neem oil as treatments. Healthy soil and crop rotation are also effective in maintaining robust plants.

How long does it take for these seeds to mature?

Seven Top Turnip Greens typically take about 30 to 60 days to reach maturity, depending on growing conditions. You can start harvesting young leaves as early as 30 days after planting for a mild flavor, or allow them to grow longer for more robust greens. The timing of harvest can depend on your personal preference or culinary needs, enabling you to enjoy fresh greens throughout the growing season and providing flexibility in your farming or gardening schedule.

Do Seven Top Turnip Greens tolerate frost?

Seven Top Turnip Greens are frost-tolerant, which makes them an excellent choice for fall or early spring planting. Frost can even enhance their flavor, making them sweeter and more palatable. This characteristic allows gardeners to continue harvesting well into colder months, providing a continuous supply of greens during the off-season. If a hard freeze is expected, providing some protection with mulching can help in preserving their quality.

Thresh Seed Co. Vegetables Editorial Review

**** The product has garnered a mixed reception from customers, reflecting a diverse range of experiences. Many users have praised the seeds for their germination rates and overall quality, with some reporting successful harvests of turnips and delicious greens even during the cooler months in Texas. Those who harvested enjoyed the freshness and taste of the greens, indicating that they were worth the wait. However, some customers expressed disappointment, particularly with the slow growth of the crops. For a few, the plants did not reach maturity within the expected time frame, leading to frustration and concern over whether they would yield a satisfactory harvest at all. This variability in growth and success seems to be a common theme in the feedback, with others highlighting their patience as seeds took longer than anticipated to develop. Overall, while many found joy in their gardening results, issues with growth times and the eventual harvest may leave some customers feeling underwhelmed. **
