Unlike other books on prog rock, Ewing avoids getting into detailed defining of the genre, instead opting to discuss subgenres, certain influential albums, and the bands responsible for them. The book features beautiful pictures and is recommended for anyone who loves progressive music. However, it does fall short of comprehensive coverage, as it primarily focuses on a potted history of the genre and not the bands themselves. The book structure incorporates major albums, types of prog, jazz, folk, kraut, neo, etc. The flaw in this book, according to some critics, is its attempt at covering the spectrum of bands evenly, which renders many hugely successful bands (such as Van der Graaf Generator/Peter Hammill, Barclay James Harvest, Camel, and Tangerine Dream) as barely mentioned. Nonetheless, this book is a worthwhile keepsake that covers all years and presents the history of progressive rock.
