The story revolves around Lord Carpenter, a newspaper director who is using his power to incite a war with Russia, and his eventual murder. Charles Venerables, the crime editor, takes on the case to keep the police from blaming the wrong person and to win the heart of his love interest. The book features witty characters, court scenes with skilled lawyers and expert witnesses, as well as comedic elements. Overall, the book is a clever and entertaining mystery, though not quite as impressive as Sprigg's other work, "Death of an Airman." -
