The Eheim Classic External Canister Filter has received positive reviews from customers. It comes with everything needed including isolating valves and a spray bar, however, customers found it helpful to also purchase a couple of large medium bags for the filtration material. The filter media includes the Eheim Substrat Pro biomedia, Eheim Mech, a sponge, a carbon filter floss, and a polishing pad. Customers were advised not to use charcoal in the filter as it wears out quickly and can leach back into the aquarium water column. The filter contains several layers of media, which vary from model to model, but the idea is to increase the filtering ability from bottom to top where the filtered water reaches the outlet. Customers recommended frequent 15-20% water changes and found the Eheim sintered media to work well. Some customers used a Hydor Inline heater to replace their Fluval 406. The main Consensus was that the Eheim Classic External Canister Filter is effective and efficient, producing clearer and cleaner aquarium water.
