The Plustek OpticFilm 8100 is a small scanner that is suitable for personal use for scanning a few film and slides. It comes with the SilverFast SE Plus 8 software that is better for professional use and is compatible with Mac OS13 and above, including M1 chip and Monterey (12.x). The scanner cannot scan a Hasselblad Xpan negative which is 24mm x 65mm, only 35mm film, negs, transparencies, or slides. The installation process for the software can be difficult, and only the included software works with this scanner. The Plustek scanner lacks automation, so it must be operated manually, making it not ideal for bulk scanning of photos. The film and slide holder may also have tiny cracks that can be fixed with glue. Some individuals have received defective units that won't turn on, leading to an unsatisfactory experience with the product. The Plustek OpticFilm 8100 is a very capable scanner that produces high quality scans of old film and slides when used correctly, and learning the software is worth the effort if you want the best possible results. Those who are used to using a simple and straightforward program may find the included software difficult to use at first. When scanning images at full resolution, it can take a while, and the scanner will not automatically serialize the filenames.
