Mass Effect: Ascension is the second book in the Mass Effect series, and it is an improvement on the first book, Revelation. The book takes place on the same timeline as the video game series and follows Grayson, a Cerberus operative, and his adopted daughter, Gillian. The story is set in Grissom Academy, where Gillian is a student. The book focuses on the biotics program at Grissom, which is named after Kahlee Sanders' estranged father. While Grayson's character is sympathetic, Kahlee Sanders is too understanding and forgiving. The story is well-paced, but the characters felt flat, and the plot was predictable. The book is heavy on action and light on character development, but the world described by the author is captivating and wondrous. Familiarity with the Mass Effect games is recommended before reading the book, but it can be enjoyed on its own.
