The spikes should be placed 4 inches away from plant roots and pushed into the soil about 3 inches, then an upside-down water or wine bottle is inserted into the opening. The bottle should fit an opening 3cm or smaller. Although the spikes can hold other water sources, the product was designed for wine or plastic bottles, and using different water containers may affect the amount of time water lasts. The bottle drains quickly at first, but once soil is evenly moist it slows down, and one spike per pot is recommended. The plant waterer worked well for vacation watering, although some reviewers wished for a slower trickle for longer lasting water, but most reported using the product successfully for short trips. Some spikes cracked over time, but for the most part the product was deemed durable and helpful. **
