Fried Barry [Blu-ray]

"Fried Barry" is a moderately budgeted movie directed and co-written by Ryan Kruger. The film is a weird take on an alien abduction movie where a drug addict and abusive family man, Barry (Gary Green) is abducted by aliens, and his body becomes occupied and controlled by an alien. This alien curiously and awkwardly observes late night in Cape Town. He stares inquisitively at shady transactions and dude-bros talking crap about women, partakes in recreational drug use, and the club scene, and then this alien impregnates a Prostitute who instantly expands and gives birth. There’s also a wild chainsaw scene. The wide-angle street and city shots, close-quarters and montage-edited drug imagery with finely crafted, lit and colored music video DNA, serve the film perfectly stylistically despite the humble budget, according to the reviewer. The film tries to embrace both zaniness and humanism. However, by the reviewer's watching experience, the film needed to go full-tilt bonkers and leave most of the humanity ahead or focus on the discovery of humanity altogether. Instead, it tried to do both, and it didn't feel that the movie captured a single identity as a result.
