The Synology 5-bay Expansion Unit DX517 Diskless allows for five more drives to be added and can be allocated to any volume you create. It can work with different capacities of drives as long as the new drives added are equal to or bigger than the previous largest drive. It is compatible with many Synology disk stations, and it is easy to set up. However, the DX517 does not offer the ability to adjust the fan speed nor the system and HDD LEDs, and there are reports of high HDD temperatures that required a jury-rigged solution with additional fans. Additionally, it is regarded as expensive and limited to the bandwidth of a single eSATA bus per expansion box. Overall, while the Synology 5bay Expansion Unit DX517 Diskless is an ideal way to expand your NAS storage, it can be pricey, and the HDD temperature may run high. The inability to adjust fan speed and turn off the system and HDD LEDs may be a nuisance to some users.
