New Zealand Sphagnum Moss is a great medium for growing Venus Fly Traps as well as other carnivorous plants. It is best used by itself for the purpose, as it is moist and has a low nitrogen environment. However, for other plants, it can be mixed with other media like perlite or bark. The fibers of the moss are long and hold water well, but when dry, it takes a good soaking to get water all the way into the center of the mass. The moss can last for years if stored dry. It can be used as a starter for Venus Fly Trap seeds if the top layer is chopped up into small pieces, but it is recommended to buy established plants, as most seed sales are scams. The Sphagnum Moss can be used as a top dressing for house plants and can be reactivated with misting and sunlight exposure.
