The device can be calibrated for cast iron measurements, though the settings don't come pre-set for it. The gauge cannot read the thickness of paint over fiberglass, but it can measure the thickness of steel through painted surfaces if the paint is cleaned off beforehand. There is a setting for stainless steel in the device, but there is no information about transferring stored data to Excel. The reviews are mixed, with one reviewer warning against buying the device as it displays invalid data and often has a white screen. Another reviewer found it impossible to use with cast iron parts and would not recommend it for engine builders.
